FLOWER FACE
'Gather the flowers of the Oak, and the flowers of the Broom, and the flowers of Meadowsweet ...'
In the final books of the Mabinogi - a collection of ancient Welsh tales, the hero, Lleu Llaw Gyffes has been cursed by his mother, Arianrhod to never have a human wife. To overcome the curse, two magicians, Math and Gwydion conjure a spell to create a wife for him. For their spell, they gather the flowers of the Oak, and the flowers of the Broom, and the flowers of Meadowsweet, and conjure up a woman of incredible beauty. She was baptised Blodeuwedd - Flower Face.
In the creation of this collection, I painted, in watercolour and gouache, the flowers of Oak, Broom and Meadowsweet - all abundant in the valley where the Hotchi-Witchi studio is located and used them as a starting point for this Flower Face design.
